| Personal History | Terra’s father, Baktosh of Clan Redclaw, was a soldier in the Kzinti Patriarchy who was brought into the confidence of a rebel movement: a population of freed Kzinti women who survived in a compound in the wilds of Kzin. There he met Maylis, with whom he would fall in love and start a family in the more traditional Federation sense. They had two children, Kolahr and Vayra. In 2378, the rebel compound was found, and Baktosh assisted in its evacuation, leading his family into Federation space to seek asylum. They joined an enclave of Free Kzinti in the Canadian prairies and had their third child, a daughter whom they named after the world on which she was born: Terra. Terra’s childhood was a happy one, filled with much travel around the Federation. While her father joined Starfleet as a security officer, her mother became an advocate aiming to convince the Federation Council to apply greater pressure to the Kzinti state to free its subservient female population. Young Terra kept track of her travels, and between the ages of 4 and 17 she had visited 88 Federation planets and a further 17 non-Federation worlds. In her travels, as well as in her time on Earth, she discovered a love of computers and programming. She wrote a program which kept track of her travels and organized all of her holo-photos, assisting her in writing a travelogue of her journey. At age 11, she and her friends programmed a PADD version of a board game they had invented. At age 13, she distributed a PADD application designed to facilitate communication between Starfleet personnel and their families; one tap could open an audio or video comm channel or send a text message without needing to go through personnel channels, but would be held if the Starfleet ship in question was in yellow or red alert. She got brought into a Starfleet Security office at age 16 when she wanted to find reports of her mother’s advocacy which bordered closely on illegal hacking. At age 18 she joined Starfleet Academy and sought an Operations track. She needed to learn a lot more about the physical side of starship operations, such as maintenance and power management, but her organizational, computer, and comm system skills proved to be an asset. At graduation, she was sent to Eris Station in the fringes of the Sol System. She was eager, however, to leave Sol and travel the galaxy, but her father encouraged her to do the very best she could and prove she was worthy of an assignment. Eris Station had been treated as an unpopular post for so long that many people lazed in their positions, but she got her Ops station on track. The cargo bay was better organized than it had been in years, and the static that blocked most subspace comm transmissions had been resolved. She had few friends on the base, as a number of others thought she made them look back, but the XO, Commander Danielle Fortin, loved her work. Fortin was friends with the CO of the USS Intrepid and knew that so many of his crew had spontaneously left, leaving him in a crisis. She recommended that Captain Lyo take on young Terra provisionally as Chief Ops Officer. |
